Second jail term for sex beast Renfrewshire teacher

A sex beast teacher has been handed his second jail term for abusing youngsters.

William Wright, 80, was sentenced to another 20 months behind bars for preying on young girls at a school where he taught music.

Wright, who is already serving a four-year sentence for molesting youngsters, was told the only way of dealing with his “shameful” behaviour was to lock him up.

The disgraced music teacher, from Elderslie, appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court for sentencing after he pleaded guilty in the middle of a fraught trial, where a victim was forced to give evidence about her harrowing ordeal.

The brave complainer branded him “smelly and creepy”.

The former pupil, who cannot be named, told the jury how Wright would corner her, touch her inappropriately, make lewd suggestions and even “pinged” her bra.

Wright even touched her sexually in a cupboard, where he switched off the light, rubbed himself up against the youngster and forced her to touch his private parts.

The monster also refused to allow her to leave the cupboard when she pleaded with him to let her go.

She added: “He was quite intimidating.”

Wright, 80, is already serving a four-year stretch for molesting two girls in the 1970s and 1980s.

The granddad admitted sexually assaulting two other youngsters at an East Renfrewshire school, where he taught on different dates between 1985 and 1990.

Defence agent Niall McCluskey told the court Wright “has a different recollection of what took place,” but admitted his responsibility by “pleading guilty during the trial”.

He added: “He wants to apologise to the victims regarding his actions.”

The court heard victims only came forward after media reports of Wright’s High Court trial in 2018.

The lawyer also urged the court to consider this offence “as part of the same course of conduct” for which he was handed four years.

Wright pleaded guilty to using lewd and libidinous practices towards a pupil on dates between August 1985 and February 1986.

He admitted that he grabbed and pulled her bra, made lewd and indecent comments to her, followed her in to a cupboard, closed the cupboard door and put the lights off, pressed his privates against her, touched her breasts and put his fingers inside her bra.

He admitted targeting the same pupil on dates between August 1985 and February 1986, where he made indecent comments and, again, followed her into a cupboard, pulled down his trousers and exposed himself to her, and compelled her to touch his privates.

He also admitted abusing another young girl on dates August 1985 and June 1988.

Sheriff Tom McCartney told Wright, who was a church organist at Elderslie Kirk, “This was a serious crime.

“The victim was subject to abuse from you as a music teacher.

“It was serious and shameful.

“And when interviewed by social workers you refused to accept responsibility and showed no remorse.

“I consider that a custodial sentence has to be imposed.”

He handed Wright 15 months for two charges involving one complainer and five months for another: meaning he will serve another 20 months behind bars.

Wright was handed a four year sentence at the High Court in 2018 and the second sentence in Paisley means he will not be out of jail until 2024.
