New mystery thriller created by and starring Paisley talent to air on BBC One tonight

Famous Paisley sons Steven Moffat and David Tenant have team up on a new TV show that hits the screen tonight.

Inside Man, a new mini-series written and created by Moffat will air on BBC One tonight at 9pm followed by the second episode at the same time on Tuesday, September 27.

The ex-Doctor Who and Sherlock writer’s new project will see David Tenant play a local vicar, something the ex-Paisley Grammar schoolboy should be familiar with as his own father Sandy McDonald, who was a Church of Scotland minister and died aged 78 in March 2016.

Mr McDonald was in charge of St Mark’s Oldhall Church, in Paisley’s Glasgow Road. And he was a minor TV star himself, and was well known as one of the presenters of STV’s religious programme Late Call in the 1970s.

He also spent a term as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Details about the show are being kept under wraps, but the limited information available does show that Hollywood star Stanley Tucci will play a prisoner on death row in the US, thousands of miles away from where the action is taking place in England.

Up and coming English actor Lydia West, who appeared in Russell T Davies’ hit series It’s a Sin, plays a journalist, while experienced English actor Dolly Wells plays a maths teacher.

The official synopsis for the four-part series says: “In the US, a prisoner on death row (Stanley Tucci) is seeking atonement as he faces execution. On a train in England, a journalist (Lydia West) is looking for a story.

“In a quiet little village, a vicar (David Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station. All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder…”

Promotional photographs of the mini-series show the blood-spattered faces of all four aforementioned characters so whatever happens in Inside Man, we can assume it’s going to be gory.

A line from Stanley Tucci’s character in the trailer is “everyone is a murderer, you just need to meet the right person”.

The final two episodes of Inside Man will air on October 3 and 4 respectively. Each episode will also be available on BBC iPlayer after it airs.

The mini-series is a co-production between BBC Studios and Netflix, and will be available to stream on Netflix at an undisclosed date in the future.

The full cast list is as follows: David Tennant as Harry Watling; Stanley Tucci as Jefferson Grieff; Dolly Wells as Janice Fife; Lydia West as Beth Davenport; Lyndsey Marshal as Mary Watling; Louis Oliver as Ben Watling; Atkins Estimond as Dillon Kempton; Mark Quartley as Edgar Hopperwood; and Dylan Baker as Casey.

Paul McGuigan directs, with Alex Mercer as producer. Sue Vertue serves as an executive producer on the show.
